School Nurse

Position Summary:

High Point School is a State of New Jersey approved, private school for students with disabilities. Students who attend are ages 5-21, and grades K-12, from school districts throughout New Jersey. We are looking for a NJ certified registered nurse who will be able to assist in maintaining a comprehensive school health program in a private special education setting.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION:

  • Must have current New Jersey License, CPR certification, School Nurse Certification if required - Non-Teaching Certificate

MINIMAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduate of a state accredited school or college of nursing

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing,
  • experience in child/adolescent mental health nursing practice

Responsibilities

The school nurse provides necessary medical treatment, health screening, counseling, medication administration and education to students with behavioral and emotional difficulties.

Student/Parent Rights

  • Maintains the confidentiality of all student/resident information.
  • Treats students/residents with dignity and respect.
  • Ensures client's right to information about themselves and their treatment as needed.
  • Communicates with students/residents and family/legal guardian as necessary to
  • provide information to make informed decisions.

Health Assessments:

  • Completes students/residents' health assessments as mandated.
  • Assesses students/residents for immunization status; assists in arranging for immunization updates.
  • Assists school physicians with annual school physicals.
  • Perform other assessments as needed, i.e., substance abuse, child abuse allegations, physical health status, post physical restraint.
  • Tests for tuberculosis infection as required by the Department of Health and follow up with students and employees.

Furnishes the Department of Health assessment results of Scoliosis screening, tuberculosis screening, and immunization status.

Provides first aid and emergency care following current physician standing orders and communicates with school principal to arrange for an appropriate course of action

Provides direct care and supervision of self-care for students with medical illnesses.

Prepares, administers, and monitors effect of medication

Orders and maintains an inventory of medications prescribed for emergency use.

Provides a secured locked space for the safe storage of medication and prescription drugs.

Evaluates students for side effects of medications.

Maintains a safe environment for students and staff in the High Point Schools; maintains universal blood and body fluid precautions. Observes and recommends exclusion of students who show evidence of communicable disease such as, but not limited to, pediculosis, scabies, tinea capitis and conjunctivitis.

Identifies areas in which the student and/or family is in need of health teaching including, but not limited to, understanding of illness, access to resources and medications.

Provides instructional information for High Point School staff including, but not limited to, OSHA bloodborne pathogen standard review, communicable diseases, or other health issues as needed.
