Custodian

POSITION SUMMARY: The Custodian is responsible for maintaining the Agency's facilities in sound physical condition in order to avoid fire and safety hazards for staff, clients and the general public. Under the direction of the Building & Grounds Supervisor, the Custodian is also responsible for the buildings' high sanitary standards, the general appearance, condition and safety of the facility and grounds.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION:

  • Valid NJ Driver's License

MINIMAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent;
  • General good health sufficient to perform duties of job including occasional heavy labor;
  • Reliable, honest and have experience in general handy and janitorial work;
  • Maintain a flexible work schedule consistent with Agency needs; and
  • Meets background search standards.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Proficient in operating floor care mechanical equipment such as extractor, shampoo vacuum and floor buffing machine for all applications; and
  • Knowledgeable in safe and effective application of chemical cleaners, sealers and wax for floor care of carpets, vinyl tile and ceramic tile.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES/PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES:

  • Opens and closes buildings as needed.
  • Cleans buildings and grounds, including bathrooms, within established Agency sanitary cleaning procedures and standards.
  • Makes periodic security checks of the facilities and is on call for emergencies and responds to alarms.
  • Removal of all trash and recyclable material from all rooms, offices, etc.
  • Performs routine maintenance functions such as lawn mowing, pruning and litter removal.
  • Responds to staff, student and/or client emergencies as needed.
  • Performs and is responsible for securing the building or buildings by established procedures daily.
  • Maintains the upkeep of furniture and equipment, the exterior grounds, landscape and snow removal (including salting/sanding).
  • Moves equipment and material between offices and buildings as needed.
  • Reports any fire hazard, accident hazard or an unsafe condition to Supervisor.
  • Performs all tasks within established Agency and OSHA safety guidelines, including use of proper safety equipment and personal protective equipment provided by Agency.
